A Day In A Life

My day starts at 5:20am. A nice and quick breakfast usually suffices. I am a graphic artist by profession and based in Manila, Philippines. Traveling to the office is a common problem in the metro, that's why I should be prepared before 7:00 in the morning to avoid being late in the office. The traffic jam here is second to none. Believe me.

Upon arriving at the office, my routine starts. First things first, email checking, one of the most important parts of the day. I tend to have a notebook ora jotter pad for doing my task list for the day. By around 8:30 to 8:45 in the morning, we are called to the boardroom for our daily morning briefing, where we talk about the latest developments of each member of the department. Our department is composed of three (3) teams namely, the sales team, marketing team, and the reservations team - by the way, I am a creative who renders my creative services in the hospitality industry. The whole team is seated in a big rectangular table with the head on the "cabisera" or the presider's seat. After the briefing at around 10 or 11 in the morning as the longest, we head back to our workstations and the real daily work begins.

Just like the regular employees, I take my lunch very promptly, 12 noon, exact. There is a place on our floor, 26th, where we can buy our lunch or eat our packed lunch if ever we have some. We usually finish our lunch as fast as we can so that we will have ample time to go around or to go to the mall just right beside our office building or sometimes, for a music break or a game break.

After doing the slacking, at around 1:00pm we shall be in our workstations or else we will be subject to the over-break offense, and we don't want that don't we?

This period is the longest period in my daily office life, the after-lunch period. Most of the time, this period is the time where all of the revisions will be poured out from the heavens. This period also makes me feel so bored so bad, I usually play my favorite tunes during this time to, number 1, lessen the boredom and number 2, get rid of the annoying and irrational revisions, because I'm always listening with my headphones on.

Then we go to the most pressuring part of the day, the 5:00pm period. This is where all the bad things usually happen like the printer will suddenly hang or the PC will crash because it can sense our fears. During also this period, the most demoralizing thing happens I think for every graphic designer around the world, the notorious last-minute revision, you read that right, last minute, and I hate it a lot. I swear to God.

I don't get it why people are so undecisive with regards to the artworks that they are requesting from us. One of the problems that I am experiencing concerning this matter is that they are approving and instructing us based on their 'preferences' and not based on what we are suggesting given the fact that we are employed to be the one to recommend and to provide the creative visual support to the team. Beauty is relative. What you see beautiful may not be unto others. When the boss starts doing such, then that is a problem indeed.

Anyhow, the clock strikes 6 and we can call it a day! I'll make my way to the tricycle line area where I will wait for my ride home, queuing of course. around 7:30pm, I will reach home and by that time I already have my meal with me. After eating dinner, I'll head to my laptop to check some of my personal emails or check if there are some job requests by my moonlight clients. It's past 8 and I am usually lying down already with my phone, watching Youtube or Netflix until I feel the spirit of the night to help me sleep safe and sound.
